Chapter Five
The sun had set by the time they reached the chosen meeting place, tension thick as everyone stayed on guard. Once Sam had finally made contact with the Dark Lords, their counterparts were more than happy to agree to a meeting. Hell, Whyte would go so far as to say they were eager, which didn’t sit well with him.
Glass encased and sleek, the building before them stood ominously. The Dark Lords had named their place of business on the human plane as the perfect spot for them to come together. While Whyte knew logically they really hadn’t had another option if they wanted the Dark Lords to agree, something still felt off. It was like meeting the enemy on their turf. Oh, who was he kidding, that was exactly what was happening.
“This is going to bite our arses so bad,” he muttered to himself as they approached the rotating doors with gold paneling.
Inside the space was grand and, well, Whyte took it back. The place was no longer ominous, but he’d sure call it obnoxious.
“Whyte has a point,” Cupid backed him up. “I mean, why did they insist on all of us being here? They seemed pretty focused on Jack coming.”
They all eyed their fellow Keeper who had been conspicuously quiet.
“So keep your eyes open and your ears peeled,” Thyme said, moving to the front of the group.
“Easy for some of you,” Sam drawled with a smirk.
Thyme rolled his eyes. “You know what I mean.”
“Have you picked up on anything?” Nick asked Sam.
Whyte knew Nick was talking about Sam’s ability to see the past. He had never asked his mate what the limits were to what he could do and see, but now found himself wondering just how far they went.
“I’ve tried to view the comings and goings that took place within this space, and I can tell you that as of an hour ago it looks like the only people in this building are the Dark Lords,” Sam informed them, reaching out to take hold of Whyte’s hand. Whyte latched onto his mate, taking strength and comfort in the gesture.
“How close to present time can you see?” Whyte quietly asked his mate.
“The hour is as close as I get, and even then that’s pushing it. Sometimes I miss things that I can’t focus on, it’s like having tunnel vision trying to view time so close to the present. Things in the peripheral go unseen.”
Whyte bit his lip, glancing around. “A lot can happen in an hour.”
“I know,” Sam said, gripping him tighter.
He focused on the fact that while there were four Dark Lords, the Keepers number eight, and if need be they could call upon Elpis who had more connections than one would first believe. Still, gone were the days where Whyte or any of them assumed they could put anything past the Dark Lords. The time where they knew for sure the Dark Lords would never attack them were over.
They moved as one through the lobby, choosing to take the stairway to the top offices.
